International Conference “Past, present and future of open-air museums”

In 2016 Belarusian State Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Lifestyle celebrates its 40th anniversary. One of the major events dedicated to it was International conference “Past, present and future of open-air museums” held on September, 7 –8. This conference brought together open-air museum staff, researchers and professionals engaged in cultural sphere from Belarus, Latvia, Poland and Russia.

The aim of the conference is to draw the attention of researchers and specialists to the problems of preserving, exhibiting and describing tangible and intangible cultural heritage; to discuss current problems, main tendencies and prospects of developing skansen museums in today’s sociocultural space.

Main topics:

  • Museum collections: how to study, analyze and exhibit them properly.
  • Techniques used to preserve and restore objects of wooden folk architecture and museum collections.
  • Ways of using intangible cultural heritage in ethnographic museums.
  • The role of marketing research in museum image maintenance, influence of informatization and globalization on the development of skansen museums.
