December 27, 2025

from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Holy Evenings, Generous Evenings, and Kalyady—these were the names of the ancient celebrations honoring the winter solstice. Gradually, folk traditions merged with Christian ones—the Church dedicated the religious holiday of the Nativity of Christ to this day. Depending on the religion, Kalyady is celebrated on different dates: Catholics from December 24 to January 6, and Orthodox believers from January 6 to 19.

On Christmas Eve, every home was thoroughly cleaned from the early morning, the whole family washed, and then they began preparing dinner. A mandatory ritual food was kutia, a porridge made from crushed barley, which symbolized prosperity in the coming year. Treats were also prepared for the carolers—a group of people who congratulated the hosts on the holiday.

We invite everyone to join in with folk traditions at the open-air museum!
